چکیده

3 ©2005 Corbett Research Pty Ltd and Michael W. Pfaffl 1 Abstract REST 2005 is a new standalone software tool to estimate up and down-regulation for gene expression studies. The software addresses issues surrounding the measurement of uncertainty for expression ratios, by using randomisation and bootstrapping techniques. By increasing the number of iterations from 2,000 to 50,000 in this version hypothesis tests achieve a level of consistency on par with traditional statistical tests. New confidence intervals for expression levels also allow scientists to measure not only the statistical significance of deviations, but also their likely magnitude, even in the presence of outliers. Graphical output of the data via a whisker box-plots provide a visual representation of variation for each gene that highlights potential issues such as distribution skew.

Transcriptional Regulation: Cancer, Neurons and the REST

REST/NRSF was first identified as a transcriptional repressor of neuronal genes in non-neuronal cells. Recent studies have now revealed seemingly paradoxical roles for REST/NRSF in neurogenesis, neural plasticity, tumour suppression and cancer progression.

No Rest for REST: REST/NRSF Regulation of Neurogenesis

Epigenetic strategies control the orderly acquisition and maintenance of neuronal traits. A complex network of transcriptional repressors and co-repressors mediates gene specificity for these strategies. In this issue of Cell, a study by Ballas and coworkers (Ballas et al., 2005) provides insight into the early lineage commitment events during neurogenesis. This study demonstrates that regulati...

Smoking-attributable cancer mortality in California, 1979–2005

BACKGROUND The adult smoking prevalence has declined more in California than the rest of the US in the past 2 decades. Further, California has faster declines in cancer mortality, lung cancer incidence and heart disease mortality. However, no study has examined smoking-related cancer mortality between California and the rest of the US. METHODS The smoking-attributable cancer mortality rate (S...

Effect of different rest intervals on the exercise volume completed during squat bouts.

The purpose of this research was to compare effect 3 different rest intervals on the squat volume completed during a workout. Twenty college-aged men volunteered to participate in this study (age 20.73 ± 2.60 years; body mass 80.73 ± 10.80 kg). All subjects performed 3 testing sessions, during which 4 sets of the squat was performed with 85% of a 1RM load. During each testing session, the squat...

Vascular adaptation to deconditioning and the effect of an exercise countermeasure: results of the Berlin Bed Rest study.

Deconditioning is a risk factor for cardiovascular disease. The physiology of vascular adaptation to deconditioning has not been elucidated. The purpose of the present study was to assess the effects of bed rest deconditioning on vascular dimension and function of leg conduit arteries. In addition, the effectiveness of resistive vibration exercise as a countermeasure for vascular deconditioning...

Deducing rest masses of quarks with a three step quantization

Using a three step quantization and phenomenological formulae, we can deduce the rest masses and intrinsic quantum numbers (I, S, C, B and Q) of quarks from only one unflavored elementary quark family ǫ with S = C = B = 0 in the vacuum. Then using sum laws, we can deduce the rest masses and intrinsic quantum numbers of baryons and meson from the deduced quarks. The deduced quantum numbers match...
